Hi, I have recently customized alerts for the first time. Specifically I changed the “node requires restart after system update” alert to delay for 5 minutes so that it does not fire and then immediately resolve when I am applying an upgrade and rebooting shortly afterwards. I understand that Netdata nodes each have their own alerting configuration, and the Netdata Cloud interface provides a way to apply configuration changes to multiple nodes at a time, so I used this facility to make the same configuration change on all my nodes.

However, the next time I added a new node, by running the suggested command from the “Connect Nodes” dialog, all alerts on the new node are created with the default settings. How can I configure an alerting configuration change to apply also to newly added nodes? Do I have to manually maintain a runbook of alerting changes that I have to re-apply every time I add a new node?

Hi,

To make your custom alert apply automatically to new nodes, set up a **Parent node** with your 5-minute delay configured, then enable the **“Use Cloud for all nodes”** (Central Alerting) mode. Every new node you connect will then inherit the same alert settings automatically, no manual steps needed.

You can follow these docs for details:

- [Edge Flexible Alerting Strategy](https://learn.netdata.cloud/docs/alerts-&-notifications#edge-flexible-alerting-strategy)

- [Central Alerting Strategy](https://learn.netdata.cloud/docs/alerts-&-notifications#central-alerting-strategy)

- [Creating Alerts with the Alerts Configuration Manager](https://learn.netdata.cloud/docs/alerts-&-notifications/creating-alerts-with-the-alerts-configuration-manager#creating-alerts-with-netdata-alerts-configuration-manager)

Best Regards,
Kanela

Thanks! I’m looking through that documentation, but I’m having a bit of trouble understanding what the process is.

I read [Parents: Your Centralization Points | Learn Netdata](https://learn.netdata.cloud/docs/netdata-parents/) , but while it says “Parents are Netdata Agents that collect and store data from other Agents”, it doesn’t explain how to actually configure a node to be a parent. Is that something that’s done by editing the configuration file on that node? I also looked through the Netdata Cloud interface, but couldn’t find anywhere to configure whether a node would be treated as a “parent”.

I’m also not sure where to find the “Use Cloud for all nodes” option. That sounds like something that would be accessible through Netdata Cloud, rather than in a configuration file, but I can’t find any reference to it in the interface, nor in any of the three documentation pages you linked (other than as a description of how things are configured, rather than something you could actually “enable” as an option).

Would I have to provision and pay for a separate server in addition to the ones I am monitoring, in order to accomplish having the same alert configuration for newly added nodes? I rather expected this to be something I could take care of directly in Netdata Cloud.
